Desiring knowing
Desiring understanding
Teachers join learners
"Children have more need of models than of critics."
-- Joseph Joubert
  • Advanced Design Institute - endeavoring to rediscover and develop design as the first tradition among the traditions of science, art, technology and spirituality.
  • AERO links to alternative education - part of the Alternative Education Resource Organization site, with a variety of links to and brief descriptions of sites offering resources for alternatives in education. Great stuff to explore!
  • The Alternative Higher Education Network - an organization seeking to support forums for the discussion of what alternative education and education mean, especially in the context of the liberal arts college; provide tools for the collaborative assessment of existing programs; provide for the creation of new programs; and help individuals meet their own networking needs.
  • Antioch University Seattle - where I did my Master's degree in Whole Systems Design (the individualized program).
  • The Center for Regenerative Studies - a functioning resident and non-resident community of students, faculty and staff which operates as a living laboratory for education, demonstration and research in regenerative technologies. Located at CalPoly Pomona in southern California, USA.
  • Ecological Design Education Network - promoting ecological design in higher education, testing and application of ecological design in professional contexts, and support for a knowledge exchange network. There is a book list, an eco-schools directory and an intern placement program.
  • Ecology at Merritt College - The Merritt College Environmental Program site, offering community college level programs and courses and including a Self-Reliant House Environmental Education Center and a Campus Eco-Restoration/Re-Vegetation project. Located in Oakland, California, USA.
  • The Evergreen State College - offering an educational environment of collaboration, active learning, real-world experience and student-directed processes.
  • The Institute for Earth Education - an alternative to agency- and industry-sponsored supplemental environmental education. A non-profit volunteer organization, started in 1974, "...helping people of all ages view the earth as a wondrous oasis of life - an oasis that we must learn to understand and appreciate if we are to assure its continued lushness and diversity." General information, membership, materials, history, philosophy, activites and more.
  • Jon's Homeschool Resource Page - your kids don't have to be "educated" by an industrial indoctrination system. A variety of alternatives can be investigated starting from this site, which is the best web resource on this topic I've seen so far.
  • Learning Research and Development Center - probing the nature of thinking, knowing, and understanding in and beyond school. For example, "throughout more than 30 years of research, LRDC has contributed to richer and more flexible concepts of learning than those on which the American system of public education was built." They have various ongoing research programs and also publications.
  • New College of California - a wide variety of programs geared to "adult learners" and alternative curricula. For example: Weekend College B.A. Completion Program, World Studies, Public Interest Law School, Poetics Program, Weekend College M.A. program, and more...
  • Oak Meadow School - creating innovative distance learning opportunities for students in grades K-12 around the world. Educational programs and learning materials for homeschoolers, traveling families, gifted and special needs students, English-speaking students living in foreign countries, and others...
  • School of Living - "...dedicated to learning and teaching the philosophy, practices and principles of living that are self-empowering for individuals within the general aim of establishing decentralized, ecologically-sound, self-governed and humane communities." Founded by Ralph Borsodi in 1934 and continuing with projects in permaculture, intentional communities, land trusts, "geonomics" and more.
  • Second Nature: education for sustainability - "...a nonprofit organization working to help colleges and universities expand their efforts to make environmentally sustainable and just action a foundation of learning and practice."
  • Sudbury Valley School - for age four through high school age, with no enforced age-segregation and a focus on student-initiated learning activities. Excellent details available at the site.
